According to Bloomberg News, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said at a private meeting attended by a large number of analysts that the demand for PS5 will not decline at any time this year, and even if they produce more consoles, it is still unlikely to meet the demand. He believes that the PS5's out-of-stock situation will continue until 2022.
He said: "I think the demand for PS5 has not cooled down this year. Even if we guarantee more equipment and produce more PS5s next year, our supply still cannot keep up with the demand. We have sold more than 100 million PS4s, considering Given our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine that the demand for PS5 will drop easily.”
000 also said that Sony is solving these problems, such as finding a second source for semiconductor chips, or modifying the design of the PS5.
From its debut on November 12, 2020 to March 31, 2021, Sony’s PS5 sold 7.8 million units. Sony expects to sell another 14.8 million PS5 units at the end of this fiscal year (March 31, 2022).
It is worth mentioning that there have been reports recently that Sony plans to start production of the redesigned PS5 console between the second and third quarters of 2022. The new version of PS5 will use AMD's new semi-custom 6-nanometer CPU, which will be cheaper than the current version of the CPU.
Sony is not the only game console manufacturer with supply problems. Nintendo also issued a warning of a shortage of parts last week, despite good sales in the quarter. For Sony, this situation is not ideal because it cannot take full advantage of the successful launch of the PS5. In addition, with the loosening of the quarantine policy caused by the epidemic, people are no longer trapped at home and doing nothing.
